Refugees to receive money for rent – By Francis Hweshe

Refugees in camps who opted for reintegration are set to receive R750 to pay for one month’s rental accommodation from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

This comes as the office of the UN resident co-ordinator said in its latest situational report that about 2 300 people displaced by the May xenophobic attacks remained in three consolidated camps.

Harmony Park had the largest number at 883, followed by Blue Waters with 570 and Youngsfield with 454.

The provincial government, which gave the refugees the option of reintegrating or going back to their home countries, plans to close all the camps by the end of September.
Hildegard Fast, head of provincial disaster risk management, said on Tuesday,  the UNHCR and the UN Children’s Emergency Fund would assist refugees with registration for repatriation or reintegration.

UNHCR regional spokesperson Yusuf Hassan said they would be supporting the refugees with rent subsidies, among other needs such as travel fares for those who wished to return home.

The organisation has increased financial support for refugees and has set up a permanent office in the city to assist them.

Zahrain Said, a refugee leader at Blue Waters, said the money had not been handed out but would be deposited into the account of a landlord.
