TAC – If it wasn’t for them – the TAC refugee relief organisers – the refugees would have been rounded up and put into camps which would have been locked “for their safety” effectively making them into prisoners
TAC have been THE lynch pins of the relief effort

Hear say [I have been told]
Cape town has been declared a disaster area [I think this means the national coffers coughff up]
Pretoria and Johannesburg also

I have just got off the phone talking to a volenteer working in Cape Town at the refugee distribution and collection point in Long Market Street, where they are organising and taking care of the surviors of the attacks in the past week

He told me there are 10,000 – 20,000 xenophobia refugees from these attacks– what do they need right now?

Here’s the list:

□ UPDATE: 26.5.08 [8.30AM]
Think women children babies and warmth
NAPPIES, BABY BOTTLES, BABY FORMULA, TAMPONS/PADS
Do get in touch with the manufaturers/yr local supermarket – great free publicity for them! seen as the good guy

VOLUNTEERS – they need people to replace them because of exhaustion – drivers packers fetchers carriers

BABY THINGS – Formula, baby bottles, nappies

FOOD – non perishable and oranges/apples [things you can transport] dried fruit sweets nuts and raisons. Bread, tined food tin openers. [There are no cooking facilities] biscuits, jam, peanut butter,

CLOTHS

BLANKETS

WATER – botted/ in bottles

TOILETRIES – loo paper, soap face cloths/sponges, towels, tampons/ sanitary towels/pads and pain killers

CASH – to be taken to coordination centre and distribution and collection point
122 Long market St Cape Town till tomorrow, Monday
, when they move to 71 – 73 Harrington St Nr Roland St in the City Centre

If you can’t go to town then you can deposit into TAC’s fund
http://www.tac.org.za/community/donate
http://www.tac.org.za/community/donate

They desperately need cash to go and bulk buy from the markets [good system in place to manage money –safety checks I was told] he told me that the refugees will be needing to be taken care of for quite some time and that Cape Town hasn’t the resources to do this – 10,000 – 20,000

They are so greatful to everyone for their generous donations and help but this will wane as things calm down . I don’t want them to struggle with lack of food clothing volunteers money etc when the rest of us have signed a sign of relief and get back to our daily lives – I really want to them to be OK

What else do they need?

Imagine you have had to escape for your life and have left everything behind – that all your worldly good are looted or destroyed that all you have are the cloths you were wearing when you had to flee

I found it helpful to imagine what I would need to survive for the next weeks as I tried to put my life back together gain

I would like to donate some food and toiletries to the refugees in Cape Town city centre. Where can I go durin my lunch hour to drop these off? Is there anything I can do over the weekends to help eg: distribute etc.
Many thanks for the great work you are doing

    Kind regards,
    Chandre
