The age old issue, freedom of expression and speech, raises it’s ugly head again!

I have just read WordPress’ announcement re Brazil and the possibility of them being shut down.

Here is a link to a site which says it legally jumps in to protect online freedom of speech, among other things
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) they, “…continue to fight for the right to free speech. Our latest campaign revolves around the legal rights of bloggers and citizen journalists…”

They ask that we bloggers, “ …Display the Blue Ribbon, to support the essential human right of free speech, a fundamental building block of free society, affirmed by the U.S. Bill of Rights in 1791 and by the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights in 1948….”

“….When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defence…….and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights….”

  1. Thanks for dropping by my blog, and i’m sorry if I came across the wrong way in forums! Have a great Monday or maybe it’s Tuesday where you are 😛

  2. Are they really trying to censure the internet. Like thats possible.

“Are they really trying to censure the internet. Like thats possible.”

    Hi Jose
If you mean the Brazilian “powers” that can shut down the connection to a site that hosts 4 million blogs – yes!
What I understood from WP’s blurb about this case is that “they” are wanting to shut down one blog on their site and the only way they [WP] can do that – as WP are not prepared to remove this blog – is to shut down the connection to WP.
    ie 4 million blogs

I’m totally anti censorship in principle as long as it doesn’t harm children – if it’s accessible to all

I believe that people who have hateful/destructive thoughts/ beliefs must have a way of expressing themselves – it’s their right
We have the choice of responding or not engaging with them
By censuring these people’s thoughts and beliefs they will be pushed underground and they will become even more hateful!
Freedom of speech/expression no matter what it is must be kept above ground – we can engage in dialogue/debate to hopefully help us understand the issues and in a respectful way get the people in question to understand an other perspective
Things that are dehumanising I believe, always come from those that need professional help! All humans are born with a magnificent heart – in my book it’s the experiences we are subjected to that change us and can derail us!
Like having violent and hateful primary carers
I have to believe that the powers that be at wordpress have deemed the content of the one blog in question, does not contravene their rules
I need to go and find them and maybe add them to the blog
Can you imagine how many hits this blog is going to get once the case is over!
    Thanx for your comments

  4. A lot of countries have tried to censure the internet like China. I think as people get more skilled at using the internet, it will become harder and harder.

  5. 5 hoh

    I hope you’re right!
But if the internet connections to blogging hosts are cut there isn’t much one can do is there?
I’m aware that in some countries you get jailed or worse if you’re caught looking at ‘offending’ sites – the B B C have been blocked for heaven sake!
The internet cafe places don’t want to be shut down either so they will act as effective censorship agents

More than likely this post/ blog is black listed or is on a list to watch – being a human rights enthusiast. ‘they’ might pick up a few tips to the loop holes or find out how to get around the search engines that look out for key words like censorship!

Jose i tried to leave a comment on your site but couldn’t find how = seems like you don’t want any feed back!
I thought you might be interested in this site i stumbled on based in the UK
    here are the sites statistics!
There were 4.9m visitors in April (4.6m in March)
They made 10.2m separate visits (9.4m)
Resulting in 54m page impressions (52m)
    There were 469m hits (477m)
These stats blows my hair back!
My hits to day – 17!
    Which i’m thrilled about!
I have no idea how people stumble onto my site – it’s a mystery

  6. I agreed with you
